About

Well hello there!

Let me attempt to tell you something meaningful about myself.

Most of the time I feel out of place in the world. I’m introverted but gregarious, shy but forceful. I love anonymity but keep getting dragged, kicking and screaming, into the public square. I grew up as an evangelical Christian, but I’m not sure the evangelical part applies to me anymore. I love my evangelical church but I’m not sure the evangelical part applies to us either. I’m neither politically conservative nor progressive and don’t carry either party’s card. I’m a writer who wishes she was a physicist and a bass player with impossibly small hands.

I am a wife to David, my husband of 13 years, and we have two daughters. I love being their mom. The best part of my day is when we are together — playing sports, doing homework (yes even that!), baking, swimming, reading, watching favorite TV shows — I love it all, except for those last few minutes of the night trying to wrestle them into bed. That part I don’t like. I love it when they are Finally In Their Beds and I can smootch on them. But the getting there — for the love of all that’s holy, why won’t they go to bed??

No matter the descriptors or labels that others use for or against me, I’m sticking with Jesus no matter what. So if you know nothing else about me, know this: I’m one of those crazy people who believes God is real, is incarnate in Jesus, and speaks even now through the stories, poems and letters of the Bible to tell us who God is, what God cares most about, and how we fit into God’s epic plan for shalom. I get it wrong a lot of the time, and so if you need people in your life who have it “right,” you might want to move along. I am a traveler, a question-asker. My favorite book of the Bible is Job, 40-some-odd chapters of doubt, accusation, grief and questions. Tension from word 1 and not an answer to be had anywhere in the text. Just an invitation to honest companionship.

So that’s me: a person who above all wants a life of honest companionship with God.

  1. Glad to find your blog through Tim. I relate to so many aspects if your “about”…shy but forceful, not conservative but not quite progressive either, struggling with certain aspects of evangelicalism, appreciating and desiring honesty, etc! I don’t know anyone local such as myself, so I deeply appreciate the kindred spirits I find on-line.
